The timeline of scientific discovery drawn on 23andme.com is not the full story. For example, one of the most significant findings of the Human Genome Project was that there are too few genes in the human cell for physical DNA alone to determine human characteristics. We are NOT the product of the genes passed down by our parents.(1)

Since then, advances in the science of epigenetics (‘control above genetics’) has demonstrated that physical DNA is turned ‘on’ and ‘off’ by protein wrappers. These wrappers are in turn controlled by environmental factors such as nutrition, stress, and mental state.

From this fresh perspective comes a growing understanding that we are we as much the product of our environment, including what we believe about ourselves, as of the physical DNA our parents gave us.(2)

Jonathan Rothberg, co-founder of the gene sequencing company Raindance, had a cousin who killed herself when she found out she had the gene for Huntington’s disease.

In 1974 Sam Londe, a retired shoe salesman, was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus, a condition that was at the time considered 100% fatal. Londe was treated, but everyone in the medical community ‘knew’ that his esophageal cancer would recur. So it was no surprise when he died a few weeks later. The surprise came after Londe’s death, when an autopsy found very little cancer in his body, certainly not enough to kill him.

What did Londe die of, if not esophageal cancer? Had he died because he believed he was going to die?(3) As the new science of epigenetics suggests, what we believe about ourselves has a huge impact upon our lives.
